Pastries for Parents

I love our preschool!  One of my most favorite things is all the parent involvement- classroom and school wide activities.  This morning Sam and I stayed to enjoy refreshments with the girls and watch them sing.

Annabelle used to be the little girl that just stood on the stage not signing or moving, not smiling or frowning, just sort of "being".  This year she really has come further out of her shell and has become a little performer:)

Lu is Lu no matter the environment (which is a blessing and a curse).  She doesn't know there is a difference between being on the stage during a concert, eating at a restaurant, or playing in the backyard.  She does a great job standing there, doing the motions and signing the parts she knows:)

Here's one of the songs they have been signing at home for weeks- we know it well:)

So sweet!

~Simple Fun~

Besides our time in the backyard, we have spent most of this week having simple fun!

The girls are "practicing" for our upcoming camping trip:)  Sleeping bags-what fun!

We stopped in Wendy's for some frosty action- an after speech snack!

Painting the fence with water- a genius pinterest idea!

They are really getting into it.

We found this cool Star Wars pen in the Cheerios!  The girls didn't believe me that toys in cereal boxes used to be a common thing!  LOL  Those were "the good ole days".

They all 3 piled into the RPC.

Sunglasses:)  They were Annabelle's idea- he was a good sport.

Grocery shopping is more fun for some than for others:)

Home made play dough OH YEAH!  We make this a lot- but have recently switched to the kool aid recipe- it smells good and colors it all in 1 step:)

world's longest hotdog!

Rainbows in a jar-  we baked rainbow cakes in mason jars for St Patrick's Day dessert.

I found this $4 bow and arrow set at the flea market- Annabelle hasn't put it down.  She LOVES the Swan Princess movie and Prince Derek uses a bow to fight off "the great animal".

Picnics, both pretend and real, were common this week:)  We enjoyed Friday lunch at the neighborhood park and we found a ton of pretty flowers (dandelions)

Our simple fun included visitors both weekends.  Gigi, Grandpa, and Uncle Phillip helped us kick off break in style and Ms Angie came the next weekend for some St Patrick's Day fun!  We enjoyed the day o' green with festive food, green finger nail polish and girl talk!

Now it's time to get these chickens back to school and back into our routine.  I've had glimpse at what summer will bring Team Haines and I'm scared!

Cave of Wonder

As part of our "date day" to celebrate my husband's birthday we drove up the road to Natural Bridge Caverns.  This was my first spelunking trip (as an adult) and it was super neat!  We went on an hour long tour in a small group with a guide.  I only had my phone so the pictures really don't do it justice- but it really was a great experience-  I left there in awe of God's crafty work!

large formations- the guide told us that it takes 100 years for the formations to grow the length of an icecube!

this formation was named the king's thrown

these were appropriately called fried egg formations lol

this cave was just recently discovered in 1966

We came home to celebrate with a dinosaur cake- decorated by the cutest lil bakers you've ever seen:)
Happy Birthday Honey!!!!

Our weather at this time of the year is great!  70-80 degrees of perfect!  Samuel is enjoying his first spring and as seen here he's a great gardner!

The little guy even tried out the cozy coup for the first time!  It was a big hit!

Big Sister Annabelle takes him for a spin!

The Life of a Princess

I was just uploading pictures to the computer when I realized just how much "royal" business (or BUSYness, I should say) goes on around here.

It cracks me up at just how into this my girls are.  I am not a mother that encourages a strict gender specific play environment.  I don't feel the need to shield them from the color blue or toys with wheels LOL!  My girls have a tool bench, trucks, cars, farming playsets, fishing toys, walkie talkies, stretchy lizards and frogs in our sand box, shovels, balls of every kind, army men, bug boxes, and swords.  But they also have high heels, a kitchen set, necklaces, rings, bracelets, purses and bags, tiaras, lip gloss, nail polish and babies.  Every toy we purchase for our children is of educational value or interest to them.  Jonathan and I believe that you give them appropriate play choices and let them explore their own interests.

We did not feel that princess toys were appropriate until Annabelle was at least 3.  After her third birthday she began playing dress up more and more and wanted to be Belle for Halloween- that was her first dress-up gown and my how our collection has grown!  Linley being the second child is of course influenced by her big sister and can't help but be involved.  Lin used to just be a innocent bystander, and then she became the forced prince (poor child thought her name was Prince Derek) but now has joined in the royal mess usually dressed as Snow White!  Now it is Sam's turn to be the prince (he never had the choice).

I sort of cringe when thinking about how far we've gone down this path- but I know that it was of their choosing- they LOVE it- and so I've learned to like it.  As I type this- Annabelle is dressed as Cinderella watching Beauty and the Beast, Linley is making noodle necklaces, and Sam is trying to eat the noodles.........

beauty rest- much is required for THIS princess!

practicing her curtsey

making friends with the evil sister from a far away land LOL

(she's too cute for her own good)

Bucket List

K-Love inspired me to create a bucket list of things I'd really like to do with my children before they grow up.  As soon as I heard this I got right to thinking - there are SO many things that I've always wanted to see/do/experience with my 3 chickens.  I can assure you that my list will never be complete- its one that will continue to expand with the age of my children and the desires of their hearts.  But taking the time to reflect on these things is such a good idea and a visual list always helps me to accomplish such goals.

Many of these things are simple and free, some will require lots of planning and more money then I care to think about right now, while others will be spur of the moment experiences-but that's true to life.  Some are heartwarming moments, some are thought provoking activities, most are silly fun- but that's true to OUR life.   So here goes........this is what I have so far......

    Groceries, Granny, and my Goal

This afternoon I picked up my girls from school- two crazy chickens that have just been woken from a much needed and never long enough nap - I never know what mood I'm going to get.  Cranky? Spacey?  The cranky usually wears off on the ride home and they eventually land on Earth and come around- or they fall asleep again and we delay this process for an hour.........okay now to the point.....

We stopped by the grocery store with our list, circled the parking lot and then settled for spot.  I have Sam taking up the front of the cart and my two space cadets that are still adjusting to this planet- neither want to ride in the back so I take a deep breath and brace myself.  Linley is the child that is easily distracted and at some point in the day, while looking at something with her inquisitive little eyes, she runs SMACK into a wall or someone else.  (Yes, this is a daily occurrence and no, I shouldn't be laughing.)  Annabelle is 4 and that means independence is her only goal in life and she genetically (my husband's side) isn't able to hurry!  We set off through the produce department as I repeat "love is patient" in my head over and over again.

Next up is the meat section- we just have to grab some chicken breast- simple right?  Well incase you didn't know the meat section is cold.  As I'm explaining to Annabelle that the quicker we grab our stuff the quicker we can leave that part of the store, Linley is nearly getting plowed down by a road rage granny with a shopping cart.  My logic about moving faster to warm up doesn't settle well with Annabelle- she's now convincing Linley that if they follow me they are going to get colder and "fweeze".  Granny also needs chicken and cuts in front of us.  So, another deep breath, I try for a third time to explain that we just need one thing and we'll zoom out before we "fweeze".  I pick up Linley, set her on my hip and grab Annabelle's hand insisting that she stop protesting.  Here it comes- THE FIT!!!!! I realize that she's still not an Earthling and is tired and it really is cold - I plop her into the back of the cart determined to get my stinkin chicken.

Annabelle is still in the middle of her routine.  I've stopped listening.  Then it happens.  Granny leans over the cart and tells my child that if she stops crying I'll give her candy.  REALLY???!!!! No, Granny I won't!  It gets better when she leans over to me and says "That's one way to get her to shut up!"  EXCUSE ME!!!!!  Did she really just say that?  She sort of laughs waiting for me to agree but I instead tell her that I'm the mother and I've got it under control.  Who walks up to a stranger, insults their child, laughs and expects them to agree????  That's my child she just bribed, mocked, and laughed at!  Granny has now undermined my parenting and disrespected my baby.  I've had this happen before- the unsolicited parenting advice from a perfect stranger- but to flat out make fun of and use profanity in front of my children was a whole new chapter in that over read book.  I really wanted to give her some advice on how to mind her own business, treat others, act in public, and respect boundaries......wish I could have!

I've lived life "being nice" which isn't a bad thing.  But the older I get the more I realize that "being nice" doesn't mean allowing people to treat you/your loved ones badly or that you cannot stand up for yourself.  I'm not saying that I want to be rude- I just want to stop being nice and instead be honest-polite but honest.  I want to take a stand, speak up and make a change in myself.

I've always lived by these stupid rules in my head
~agreeing with others just to get along
~never reclining my airplane seat so I don't bother another
even though I'm the one with a lap child (I know that sounds ridiculous!)
~letting other people take control of things that are rightfully mine
~not speaking up for fear of upsetting or hurting someone
~eating the wrong food at a restaurant because I don't want to inconvenience the waiter
~being the messenger  if asked (a role that I've never liked playing)

Well I could list a million more stupid things I've always thought/done- but the point is I don't want to do them any more!  I realized, during Granny's disturbing statements, that the old me probably would have sheepishly agreed and laughed it off.  No matter how much I despised what she was saying and wanted to lay out some truths for her, I would have just agreed to appease the situation and avoid the awkwardness.  I've lived with much frustration and guilt because I wasn't honest.  Being honest is much nicer then "being nice".  This will be my goal for 2012- stop "being nice".

So this is my revelation of the day- I need to be more honest, less fearful, and do my grocery shopping without the kids!
